Doctoral GEA Program

GEA

PhD. in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis (GEA)

One of the great challenges of the twenty-first century is the sustainable management and conservation of natural resources. We face threats from pernicious terrestrial and aquatic invasive species, declining fisheries, shrinking wetlands, decreasing forest areas that are becoming increasingly fragmented, an ever expanding rural-urban interface that creates a host of problems ranging from diseases associated with human-wildlife interactions to increasing fire hazards, and pressures to make forests more productive and more amenable to multiple uses.

The College of Natural Resources and Environment hosts the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis. Geospatial research involves Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the Global Positioning System (GPS), remote sensing, and imagery analysis. Environmental analysis in this program is broadly defined from rural/natural to urban/human environments. Many of our students focus on the complex interactions among people, nonhuman biota, and environmental conditions. This doctoral program combines cutting-edge training and research in the theory and application of geospatial science with environmental analysis to enhance research on a broad range of contemporary natural resource and environmental issues.

Students in the GEA program find homes mainly in the department of Geography, but can be situated in the home departments of their adviser in the College of Natural Resources and Environment (Fisheries and Wildlife Science, Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, and Sustainable Biomaterials). Some students work with faculty in other colleges as well.
