Barrett Gutter is a collegiate assistant professor of meteorology. Prior to joining the Virginia Tech faculty in Fall 2025, he was an associate teaching professor in the Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University. He received a Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences with a Geospatial minor from Mississippi State University (2017), a M.S. in Geosciences (Operational Meteorology) from Mississippi State University (2013), and a B.S. in Geography (Environmental & Natural Resources) from the University of Alabama (2011). Dr. Gutter teaches a wide variety of courses, including Weather Analysis, Weather Forecasting, Severe Weather, and Radar and Satellite Meteorology. In addition, Barrett leads a two-week storm chase field course during the summer. In his free time, he enjoys dog training, playing golf, snowboarding, and photography.
